Atomic is renowned as one of the most reliable and effective mechanical boost controllers on the market. It provides a repeatable and stable boost curve, fast boost build-up and a high level of performance for the outlay.<\/p>\n
The Atomic boost controller was tested on a Subaru WRX MY02 with a turbo-back exhaust system as its only modification, and directly compared with the factory controller. First, a baseline dyno run was carried out with the factory boost control, during which boost pressure was also measured. Atomic was then installed and set to the same maximum boost pressure of 0.9 bar (13.2 psi), allowing the turbocharger spool-up time to be accurately compared before and after installation.<\/p>\n
The dyno graph shows the boost curve with Atomic in green and the factory curve in blue. Both tests were carried out in 4th gear. That Atomic was set to the same maximum value can be seen towards the end of the graph, where the curves converge. Despite this, a clear gain is noticeable in the lower rev range, reaching up to 18 kW (23.4 hp) at the wheels.<\/p>\n
This power gain shows that Atomic enables a significantly earlier boost build-up than the factory controller. In practice, this means considerably better acceleration, as the usable power band starts 1700 rpm earlier. This is achieved without exceeding the factory maximum boost pressure.<\/p>\n
It is important to emphasise that MY01\u201302 models (MY02\u201303 in the USA, GDA chassis) respond very well to this modification. The factory boost map on these models is very conservative, as it was designed to maintain a flat torque curve and linear power delivery, which significantly reduces the sensation of driving a turbocharged engine.<\/p>\n
Boost pressure can also be set above the factory value for an additional increase in power, but the purpose of this test was to demonstrate the improved turbocharger spool-up potential on this specific WRX model. For a more lively engine feel, the Atomic or Reactor controller is an effective upgrade to the boost control system.<\/p>\n
