Replacing the factory exhaust with a performance system is one of the most popular modifications. A deeper sound, better gas flow and a more aggressive rear end are every enthusiast’s goals. But when buying, the most important step is often overlooked the law and type approval. To avoid heavy fines and trouble with the police, we have for you a short guide to the legality of performance exhausts.

A piece of paper in the glovebox is not enough!
Drivers’ biggest misconception is believing that for for legal driving it is enough to keep the certificate (TÜV certificate or EC approval) in the glovebox. That is not true! Any change to the exhaust system that affects the car’s noise or emissions must be officially inspected (at bodies such as LPP or RTI) and entered in the vehicle’s registration documents. Only then is your car roadworthy and safe from fines.
Be careful when buying
For the approval process to be possible at all, the exhaust you choose must have the right documentation. In our online shop we have made sure for complete transparency – every product clearly states whether it comes with the right documentation for road use or not.
With us you will find a wide range of performance exhauststo suit different needs:
- Milltek exhaust systems: A respected British brand whose systems mostly carry TÜV certification, which makes approval straightforward.
- Ta Technix and Novus performance silencers: An excellent choice with EC (European) approval, which also confirms compliance for road use.
- Scorpion exhausts: Top-class systems with outstanding sound and performance, but they have no TÜV approval. They are intended mainly for track use (track days) and are not suitable for legal road use.
The right choice for your car
Exhaust systems also differ in which part of the factory exhaust they replace. Among the most popular for getting the right sound while staying legal are Cat-back systems (from the catalytic converter back) and the newer GPF-back systems (from the particulate filter back). And for those after the maximum gain in power and flow, we also offer Downpipe kits, where you need to pay particular attention to the catalytic converter specifications and legality.
Conclusion: Buy smart and stay legal. Choose an exhaust system with the right documentation from a trusted seller and make sure for the official entry in the vehicle documents. That way your driving will be full of enjoyment – and free of unnecessary stress.
