Oil coolers – how they work and why the upgrade matters

The right oil viscosity is one of the most important things for the engine to run properly. At higher temperatures the oil’s viscosity drops, which means it becomes thinner and less effective at lubricating and protecting the engine’s moving parts. Under heavier loads, such as a track day, oil coolers play a key role in keeping oil at its optimal temperature. In this article we explain how oil coolers work, why they matter and when it makes sense to fit or upgrade one.

How exactly do oil coolers work?

An oil cooler works on the simple principle of heat transfer. Engine oil is routed from the engine through hoses into the cooler, where it flows through a series of thin tubes or fins exposed to a cooling medium (usually air or coolant). As the oil passes through the cooler, heat is transferred from the oil to the cooling medium, lowering its temperature before it returns to the engine.

Some cars have an oil cooler from the factory, which makes upgrading it a simple job. On cars that have no oil cooler from the factory, an oil take-off point has to be created on the engine. This is usually done with special adapters (sandwich plates), which are fitted between the engine block and the filter for oil.

You also need to be careful because with an incorrectly fitted oil cooler the oil cannot reach its optimal operating temperature. We prevent this by fitting an oil thermostat.

Why fitting or upgrading an oil cooler matters

1. Improved efficiency: Upgrading to a larger or more efficient oil cooler can significantly improve heat dissipation, letting the engine run in its optimal temperature range. This leads to better engine efficiency, more power and, above all, a longer engine life.

2. Longer oil life: Keeping oil temperature lower not only protects the engine but also extends the life of the oil itself. Oil that gets less hot keeps its lubricating properties longer, which reduces the need for frequent oil changes.

How to choose the right upgrade?

When choosing an oil cooler upgrade it is important to consider several factors, including the type and performance of your car, the expected operating conditions and the space available for installation. It is advisable to consult specialists or specialised workshops. If you need help choosing or fitting it, you can contact us. We will gladly help you.
