Standard versus performance brake fluid: which one is right for you?

Standard versus performance brake fluid: which one is right for you?

In the car world safety always comes first, so choosing the right components and fluids is for your car is essential. Among a car’s important components are the brakes, which ensure safe stopping and reduce the risk for an accident. When choosing brake fluid, drivers often face the dilemma of standard versus performance fluid. In this article we look at the differences between these two types of brake fluid and help you work out which is right for you.

P. S. In this article we focus solely on the differences between standard and performance fluid (in our case DOT 4); we will not compare the various DOT brake fluid types. Choose the correct DOT brake fluid according to your car manufacturer’s recommendations.

Standard brake fluid

Standard brake fluid is the fluid car manufacturers normally recommend for everyday driving and normal road conditions. This fluid is designed for optimal operation at normal temperatures and in everyday use. Standard brake fluid is the cheaper option and meets the needs of most drivers who do not drive extremely hard or race.

Performance brake fluid

Performance brake fluid is designed primarily for motorsport drivers. This fluid is formulated to withstand the higher temperatures and greater loads that come with aggressive driving. Performance brake fluid offers better performance at high speeds and under heavy braking, which is essential for racers and fans of fast driving.

The main differences between standard and performance brake fluid

Temperature tolerance:

Standard brake fluid has a lower temperature tolerance, which means it can break down faster at high temperatures and lose its properties.

Performance brake fluid has a higher temperature tolerance and so keeps working even in extreme driving conditions.

Loads and performance:

Performance brake fluid is formulated to withstand greater loads and deliver better braking at high speeds.

Standard brake fluid is intended for everyday use and does not offer the same performance as performance fluid in extreme conditions.

Price:

Standard brake fluid is usually cheaper than performance fluid, which matters for drivers who want to keep maintenance costs to a minimum.

Which brake fluid is right for you?

The choice between standard and performance brake fluid depends on how and where you drive. If you drive every day and don’t do anything extreme, standard brake fluid will be enough for your needs. On the other hand, if you drive fast or race, performance brake fluid is the better choice, as it gives you better braking and more safety.

Choosing the right brake fluid keeps the brake system working optimally and makes your driving safer.
