CTS Turbo intercooler for Audi A3 II (8P) 2.0T

The CTS Turbo FMIC kit for the Audi A3 2.0T is designed as a direct replacement for the original front-mount intercooler (FMIC). Installation is possible without cutting or modifying the bumper. The original intercooler is sufficient at factory boost pressures, but when boost pressure is increased with an ECU upgrade or software optimisation, it struggles more to cope with rising charge-air temperatures. Higher charge-air temperatures can cause boost pressure cut-out and reduced ignition advance, which reduces engine power.

CTS’s direct-fit FMIC uses a high-efficiency bar-and-plate core that helps reduce pressure drop. A lower pressure drop means the turbo operates under less load to achieve a given boost pressure. If the turbo produces 30 psi of boost pressure on the compressor side, while the intercooler causes a pressure drop of 10 psi, the boost pressure measured by the ECU will be (30 psi – 10 psi) = 20 psi. With an efficient CTS FMIC, the turbo will not have to work as hard to achieve the desired boost pressure. This provides two benefits: more efficient operation extends the turbocharger’s service life, while the charge air after the turbocharger is cooler and denser, resulting in more power at the wheels.
