The CTS Turbo JB-640RS journal bearing hybrid turbocharger with a stainless steel exhaust turbine housing is specifically designed for vehicles on the MQB platform.
It is an affordable direct replacement or upgrade for the factory IS12, IS20 or IS38 turbochargers. The turbocharger uses its own journal bearing design and is intended for road use.
The development goal was to achieve more power in the upper rev range compared with the JB-600. A journal bearing CHRA core from the IS38 turbocharger is used, adapted for larger turbine and compressor wheels. The thrust bearings and thrust collars have been increased by 2 mm to withstand the additional load. The oil channels have been increased by 0.72 mm, allowing a more effective hydrodynamic oil wedge during turbocharger operation. The turbocharger has been extensively tested on vehicles from the manufacturer and its partners worldwide, at different altitudes and in different climates.
The turbocharger can achieve approximately 650 hp at the crankshaft, approximately 550–600 whp with E85 fuel and 460–480 whp with 93-octane petrol**. Compared with the JB-600, it responds slightly more slowly during spool-up, but offers more power in the upper rev range.
We recommend boost pressure between 29 and 33 psi, or less if the fuel system or factory engine is the limiting factor. Do not exceed the recommended boost pressure range, as this reduces efficiency.

Note: when installing the turbocharger, always follow the correct wastegate actuator checking and adjustment procedure. The recommended wastegate actuator voltage is 3.4–3.6 V.
Installation must be carried out by a qualified technician. Prime the turbocharger with oil before installation, change the engine oil and oil filter, and follow the correct break-in procedure.
Mounting hardware or gaskets, the wastegate actuator and turbo outlet connector are not included. For installation, use the same mounting kit as for the factory turbocharger.
