Renault’s sports models are renowned for their race-bred driving feel, allowing you to get the most enjoyment from driving on the road or track. However, the gearshift feel does not match this level of precision. FMSS9 is an adjustable and carefully engineered solution to this issue, making a noticeable difference particularly when shifting at high revs.

Installing FMSS9 on the gearbox-side short-shift mechanism is very straightforward; no special tools are required, and the gearbox and original shift mechanism remain in place. As these vehicles are older, removing the original mechanism can be extremely difficult. Retaining it therefore saves the time and cost of a challenging removal, while also retaining the weighting of the gear lever for smooth shifting.

FMSS9 was designed specifically for the Renault Clio 3 Renault Sport 197/200, but it also fits some other vehicles with the same gearbox (TL4). As it is an adjustable kit, it allows up to 32% shorter gear lever travel compared with the original setup. If required, it can be adjusted closer to the original travel length.

Development was aided by 3D scanning and 3D-printed prototypes, which were used to develop the optimal solution for this short shifter. The most important part of the development was ensuring that the shift cables were no more offset than with the original linkage. Using 3D scans, the shift ball stud was positioned in the same plane as in the original setup, while the 3D-printed prototype enabled the findings to be confirmed before production in the in-house machine shop. Design review found that the shift cable would be under tension, so a replacement shift cable bracket was developed for the FMSS9 kit.

FMSS9 is installed through the original shift mechanism, making installation simpler than with other gearbox-side short-shift mechanisms. The included instructions describe installation on the Clio 3 RS platform, while the TL4 gearbox is also used in other vehicles. Installation can be completed with a basic set of tools in approximately 1.5 hours.
