Garrett uses bar-and-plate technology for its charge air cooler cores. The bars used in the Garrett intercooler core structure are much thinner than other manufacturers can offer. These thin bars have a very positive effect on active cooling area, weight and pressure drop. The cooling fins used are an advanced high-density offset design, for which has been proven to reduce intake air temperature very effectively.
Each core is rated for a specific horsepower, making it easy to match the core to your power target.
In general, use the largest core that will fit while still allowing properly designed end tanks in the available space. For air-to-air charge air coolers, good external airflow through the core is of course also very important. The goal of a well-designed charge air cooler is consistent charge air flow through the tanks and core for optimising cooling while also minimising pressure drop. When we talk about pressure drop, it is for the fact that the pressure for the intercooler will be lower than before it – this will always be the case with every intercooler design, but a good design gives a lower pressure drop. Side entry into the end tanks is often ideal both for flow distribution as for pressure drop, but in many cases this is not possible due to space constraints in the vehicle.
“Soft mounting” the charge air cooler with rubber isolators is recommended to protect against vibration damage and reduce thermal expansion stresses.
