HF-Series intercooler for BMW 118d, 120d and 320d (E81–E93, N47D20)

This upgraded intercooler for the BMW 118d, 120d and 320d is part of the HF-Series range. The high-quality Bar’n’Plate core provides excellent cooling performance, delivering strong performance even in demanding conditions while remaining highly robust. It offers high resistance and heats up less than comparable cores from other manufacturers.

The complete system is also designed for optimum flow. This keeps pressure loss to a minimum, while the entire charge-air route has been developed using CAD flow analyses. The intercooler end tanks, made from high-strength cast aluminium, also contribute to this design.

What does an upgraded intercooler provide?

To express the exact power increase from an intercooler in figures, many unknown factors must be taken into account, such as factory power variation, other hardware modifications and the software used during measurement. Results vary from vehicle to vehicle. As a rule of thumb, engines with increased power can achieve up to 5–10 %.

What is at least as important is that, at high outside temperatures, the intercooler helps prevent power loss or the activation of the temperature protection stored in many engine control units. This allows you to rely on the engine’s full power, whether the engine has already been software-tuned or remains standard.

Recommendation

Use the HF-Series intercooler in combination with hardware and software optimisation. Reducing back pressure, which relieves the turbocharger, and cooling the charge air, which increases the oxygen content in the combustion chamber and reduces thermal load, results in an effective performance upgrade. This allows the potential of any turbocharged engine to be used more efficiently.
