A diverter valve kit is essentially a boost-pressure bypass that prevents the boost pressure from being slowed when the throttle closes. With this system, the pressure is diverted directly upstream of the throttle body. As the valve is positioned downstream of the intercooler, only cooled air is recirculated.

On many engines, the standard diverter valve is positioned upstream of the intercooler, meaning that hot, uncooled air is recirculated. The standard diaphragm valve is fitted in a very hot area of the engine bay. Over time, continuous exposure to heat damages the valve, causing it to leak. A leaking valve leads to poorer throttle response and power losses, which are often not noticed immediately because the damage develops gradually rather than occurring suddenly. The driver consequently becomes accustomed to increasingly poorer response and reduced power.
