The car’s chassis is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads due to the driver’s driving style. It is particularly stressed by the transfer of body mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to loads up to three times greater than the other. This causes significant chassis flex, or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flexing during cornering can cause unwanted handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
