The vehicle chassis is the most heavily loaded part during fast driving, as its rigidity is affected by shifts in the body’s weight during fast cornering, heavy braking and hard acceleration.
When cornering, the load on one side of the vehicle can be up to three times greater than on the other side. This causes the chassis or bodywork to bend and twist, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Bending and twisting of the chassis while driving through corners can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
