The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest stress while driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of body mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. This results in greater bending and twisting of the chassis or body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Bending and twisting of the chassis when cornering can cause unwanted handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
