A car’s chassis is the part exposed to the greatest loads while driving. These loads are caused mainly by the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking and acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to 3 times more than the other. This can cause considerable chassis flex or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, resulting in a loss of tyre grip.
Chassis deformation and flexing during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
