Performance exhaust systems for more power and a better sound

Performance exhaust systems are one of the most popular upgrades because they improve performance, sound and looks at the same time. A stock exhaust system is designed mainly to be quiet and cheap to build, so it has narrow pipes, tight bends and silencers with high back pressure. A performance system changes that: a larger inner diameter, smoothly formed bends and less restrictive silencers free up the flow of exhaust gases, which brings more power and performance — on turbocharged engines you will often also notice a quicker turbo response.

An important but often overlooked benefit of the upgrade is weight saving. Stainless steel and titanium are considerably lighter than stock aluminised systems, so with a complete cat-back system the saving easily reaches a few kilograms — at the rear of the car, where it makes the biggest difference to driving dynamics.
