VTA is a high-performance blow-off valve solution for the Ford Focus ST and Borg Warner turbochargers. The product is intended for vehicles with a 2.0-litre engine.

If you want a pronounced sound as well as performance, GFB VTA delivers both. Combining the proven benefits of the DV+ system with venting to atmosphere, VTA creates an aggressive blow-off sound, improves throttle response and boost recovery, and provides better boost retention and reliability under extreme conditions.

The factory diverter valve commonly used on these turbochargers has two important shortcomings: reliability and operation. It is also almost silent. VTA eliminates these issues as follows.

Reliability

The factory diverter valve can fail in two ways: the non-reinforced rubber diaphragm can split, while the metal valve stem sliding in the plastic cover can stick. In both cases, there is a risk to the turbocharger, as the ECU will attempt to increase the wastegate duty cycle due to boost pressure leakage, which significantly increases turbocharger speed.

VTA uses CNC-machined solid components designed for a long service life, which cannot be damaged by high boost pressures or the associated higher charge air temperatures.

Operation

The factory diverter valve normally operates in only two states – fully open or fully closed. When it opens at low boost pressure or during a partial lift of the throttle in the middle of a corner, it causes greater turbo lag and a noticeably non-linear transition in boost pressure. When the throttle is lifted and the valve opens, this is felt as a pronounced drop in power.

VTA allows the piston to open and close progressively according to the boost pressure present, so it releases only as much air as necessary to prevent compressor surge. This is the fundamental purpose of a diverter or blow-off valve. Boost pressure transitions are therefore smoother, throttle response is more linear and predictable, and the turbo lag caused by the factory diverter valve is reduced.

VTA or DV+?

The choice depends on whether you want the sound. Both valves are made from materials of the same high quality and use the same valve mechanism, so they offer the same benefits in terms of operation and reliability. For sound, VTA vents air to atmosphere, while DV+ returns it to the intake system and therefore remains quieter.

Why choose VTA instead of a BOV spacer?

BOV spacers are affordable and create sound, but that is their only advantage. All of the factory diverter valve’s operating and reliability issues remain, as the spacer does not alter its components or operation in any way. VTA improves the operation of the factory diverter valve for more sound and better performance.
