With a further 6% increase in airflow and significantly improved cooling performance, this intercooler is a must-have for the Ford Focus RS Mk.3. On tuned vehicles, power gains of up to +16 PS were measured with all other conditions unchanged.
Advantages:
- considerably cooler charge air, improving engine combustion;
- quicker engine response;
- improved flow.
This makes the product suitable for both standard-power vehicles and motorsport, as it also supports considerably higher power outputs. Each intercooler was built for the relevant vehicle, calculated using flow simulations and tested on the manufacturer’s own rolling-road dyno.

A parts certificate for straightforward registration under §19.3 is included. This intercooler was also tested in combination with the open E-Intake V5 and the HJS downpipe; this is stated in the parts certificate.
This upgraded intercooler for the Ford Focus III RS is a highlight of the HF-Series range. The high-quality BNP core provides excellent cooling performance in demanding conditions while remaining highly robust. It offers high resistance and does not heat up as readily as comparable cores from other manufacturers. The entire system is designed for optimum flow with minimal pressure loss, while the complete charge-air path was developed using CAD flow analysis. The cooler end tanks are made from high-strength cast aluminium.
What does an upgraded intercooler actually provide?
The exact power increase provided by an intercooler cannot be expressed as a single figure, as many unknown factors must be considered, including factory power variation, other hardware modifications and the software used during measurement. Results vary from vehicle to vehicle. As a rule of thumb for tuned engines, an increase of up to 5–10% can be expected.
At least as important is the fact that, at high outside temperatures, the intercooler helps prevent a loss of power or the activation of the thermal protection stored in many ECUs. This allows you to rely on the engine’s full performance, whether it has been software-tuned or remains standard.
Recommendation
We recommend using HF-Series intercoolers as part of a hardware and software upgrade. Reducing back pressure, which takes the load off the turbocharger, and cooling the charge air, which increases the oxygen content in the combustion chamber and reduces thermal load, allows the potential of any turbocharged engine to be used efficiently.
When carrying out hardware or software tuning, charge-pressure loss must not be overlooked. If vehicle power is increased by chip tuning, charge pressure will also rise in 99% of cases. When the standard intercooler is retained, charge-pressure loss increases exponentially. The turbocharger must then work harder, increasing its thermal load, shortening its service life and accelerating wear through higher rotational speeds. HF-Series intercoolers provide the ideal balance between cooling performance and charge-pressure loss.
Road use: The intercooler includes a parts certificate for registering the modification under §19.3. The certificate also confirms compatibility with the open E-Intake V5 and HJS downpipe. It also permits combination with ECE-approved exhaust systems, including the EGO-X valved exhaust system, and with replacement catalytic converters from other manufacturers carrying ECE 103R approval, provided the original characteristics of these components are retained and this is confirmed by a stationary noise measurement.
