What exactly does an upgraded intercooler provide?

It is not possible to express the exact power increase provided by an intercooler as a single figure, as many unknown factors must be considered, including factory power variation, other hardware changes and the software used. Results vary from vehicle to vehicle. As a rule of thumb for tuned engines, an increase of up to 5–10% may be expected.

Just as important, the intercooler helps prevent power loss at high ambient temperatures and avoids reaching the temperature protection threshold programmed into many control units. This allows the engine to maintain its full performance, whether it has been software-optimised or remains standard.

Recommendation

We recommend using the HF-Series intercooler together with hardware and software optimisation. Reducing back pressure, which takes the load off the turbocharger, and cooling the charge air, which increases the oxygen content in the combustion chamber and reduces thermal load, allows the potential of a turbocharged engine to be used more efficiently.

When tuning a vehicle, charge-pressure loss must not be overlooked. Increasing power through chip tuning also increases charge pressure in 99% of cases. With the standard intercooler, charge-pressure loss rises exponentially, forcing the turbocharger to work harder. This increases its thermal load, shortens its service life and accelerates wear due to higher rotational speeds. HF-Series intercoolers provide the ideal balance between cooling performance and charge-pressure loss.
