HF-Series intercooler kit for VAG 2.0 T(F)SI EA888 Gen.4 (Golf 8 GTI, Leon IV, Tiguan II)

This intercooler for the VW Golf 8 GTI is a key product in the HF-Series range. The high-quality Bar’n’Plate core provides excellent cooling performance, even under demanding conditions, while remaining extremely robust. It offers high resistance to heat and warms up less than comparable cores from other manufacturers.

In our tests, an intake air temperature of just 23 °C was achieved at an ambient temperature of 17.5 °C. Even with our substantial Stage 2 upgrade producing 457 PS, for example in a Golf 8 Clubsport/R, the temperature under full load remained no more than 9.5 °C above ambient.

The entire system is designed for optimum flow. This means minimal pressure loss, while the complete charge-air route has been developed using CAD flow analyses. The cooler end tanks are also made from high-strength cast aluminium and feature our WAY FIN TECHNOLOGY. This consists of an additional guide fin inside the tank, ensuring even and optimum filling of the entire core.

The intercooler’s inlet and outlet diameters have been increased to 70 mm. Combined with the reinforced SF-Hoses silicone hoses included in the kit, this provides an excellent foundation for increasing engine performance.

What does an upgraded intercooler provide?

To express the exact power increase from an intercooler in numerical terms, many unknown factors must be considered, including factory power variation, other hardware changes and the software used during measurement. This differs from vehicle to vehicle. As a general rule for tuned engines, an increase of up to 5–10% may be possible.

Just as important is preventing a loss of performance at high ambient temperatures, or even activation of the temperature protection stored in many engine control units. This allows the engine to maintain full performance, whether it has already been optimised in software or remains standard.

Recommendation

We recommend using our HF-Series intercoolers as part of a combination of hardware and software optimisation. Reducing back pressure, thereby relieving the turbocharger, and cooling the charge air, which increases the oxygen content in the combustion chamber and reduces thermal loads, allows the potential of any turbocharged engine to be used efficiently.

When engine performance is increased through chip tuning, boost pressure also rises in 99% of cases. Using the standard intercooler causes boost pressure loss to increase exponentially. The turbocharger must work harder, increasing its thermal load and reducing its service life, while higher rotational speeds accelerate wear. Our HF-Series intercoolers create the ideal balance between cooling performance and boost pressure loss.

Road use: The product has TTG parts type approval. Under this approval, it has been tested in combination with other HG components, provided that those components also have their own approval.
