Technical optimisation for maximum performance
HG Motorsport high-performance ignition coils
Maximum ignition energy and high thermal stability for modern high-performance engines.
In modern vehicles, particularly tuned engines, original ignition coils quickly reach their limits. Misfires, uneven combustion and thermal overload can be the result. HG Motorsport high-performance ignition coils have been specifically developed to overcome these challenges. They provide increased ignition energy, improved thermal stability and consistently reliable performance, even under the most demanding conditions.
Technical features of the HG Motorsport ignition coils
- Optimised primary and secondary windings: more turns and high-quality copper wire improve energy transfer and provide consistently high ignition voltage.
- Increased ignition energy (+10% compared with OE): optimum spark plug supply throughout the complete dwell period, ideal for high-performance engines.
- Consistent energy output under high load: particularly suitable for turbocharged and supercharged engines requiring stable ignition voltage over longer periods.
- Extended service life: high-quality insulation materials and optimised windings minimise thermal stress and protect against internal short circuits.
- Thermal resistance: continuous operation up to 120°C and stable operation up to 140°C without loss of performance.
- Optimised spark formation: stable ignition even at high boost pressures and richer mixtures, significantly improving combustion efficiency.
The diagram shows the superior ignition energy of the HG Motorsport ignition coils compared with standard components:
- Up to 1.5 ms: both coil types deliver comparable energy.
- From 2.0 ms: the energy of standard ignition coils drops significantly, while the HG Motorsport ignition coils maintain consistently high values.
- At 3.0 ms: the HG Motorsport ignition coils deliver almost 25% more energy, which is decisive at high engine speeds and in tuned engines.
Even at a temperature of 140°C, the ignition energy of the HG Motorsport ignition coils remains stable at 70 mJ, while OE coils have already failed or reached critical values.
Ideal applications
- High-performance engines: optimum ignition even under extreme loads.
- Motorsport and trackdays: stability and consistent energy during continuous operation.
- Daily drivers with increased power: improved efficiency and ignition stability in everyday use.
- Replacement for OEM ignition coils: greater reliability and longer service life.
Winding structure and operation
The ignition coils use an optimised primary and secondary coil structure. The primary winding generates a strong magnetic field which induces high voltage in the secondary winding as the field collapses. Thanks to the higher number of turns and improved insulation, consistent ignition energy is maintained even at high engine speeds and peak loads.
Thermal testing and long-term results
1. Continuous thermal load
- Test setup: continuous operation at 120°C with simulated load changes over 100 hours.
- Result: no reduction in performance and no thermal degradation of the HG Motorsport ignition coils.
- Comparison: OE ignition coils lost approximately 25% of their energy after 50 hours, followed by initial material changes.
Additional test at 140°C
- HG Motorsport: stable operation for 8 hours without failures.
- OE ignition coils: performance drop of up to 40% after 4 hours, followed by thermal failures.
Summary of laboratory data
- Maximum ignition energy: HG Motorsport 120 mJ; OE ignition coil 90 mJ.
- Continuous load at 120°C: HG Motorsport > 100 hours; OE ignition coil 50 hours.
- Functionality at 140°C: HG Motorsport stable for up to 8 hours; OE ignition coil performance drops after 4 hours.
- Insulation resistance at 500 V: HG Motorsport > 20 MΩ; OE ignition coil approximately 10 MΩ.
