A car’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When weight is transferred in corners, one side of the vehicle can be subjected to a force up to three times greater than the other. This causes significant chassis flex, or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, which results in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and flex in corners can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
