The vehicle chassis is among the parts subjected to the greatest loads as a result of the driver’s driving style. This is particularly evident when the vehicle body’s weight is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer when cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. This results in significant bending and twisting of the chassis or body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Bending and twisting of the chassis when cornering can cause poorer handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
