The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident when the vehicle’s body mass is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or intensive acceleration.
When driving through corners, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more force than the other. This can result in greater chassis or bodywork twisting and deformation, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting when driving through corners can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
