The car’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest stresses due to driving conditions. This is particularly evident when the body’s weight is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. The result is significant deformation and twisting of the chassis or body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Deformation and twisting of the chassis when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
