The car’s chassis is the part exposed to the greatest loads during driving. These loads are mainly caused by the transfer of the body’s weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. This can lead to significant deformation and twisting of the chassis or body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Deformation and twisting of the chassis during cornering can cause unwanted handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
