The vehicle chassis is the part most exposed to loads during driving. This is primarily due to the transfer of body mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
When cornering, the transfer of mass can result in forces on one side of the vehicle that are up to three times greater than on the other side. This causes significant bending, deformation and twisting of the body, which can result in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
