A car’s chassis is the part exposed to the greatest loads while driving. These loads are caused mainly by the transfer of the body mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to 3 times more force than the other. This can result in considerable chassis flex as well as body deformation and torsional twisting, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flex during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
