The vehicle’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads while driving. This is particularly apparent when the body’s mass is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, mass transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. This can result in greater chassis bending and twisting, or bodywork deformation, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
