The car body is the part subjected to the greatest loads while driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of the body’s weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or decisive acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. The result is greater deformation and twisting of the body, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Deformation and twisting of the chassis when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
