The car’s chassis is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads as a result of the driver’s driving. This is particularly evident when the vehicle’s weight is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer when cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to as much as three times more force than the other. This causes significant chassis flex, deformation and torsional twisting of the body, resulting in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and flex when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
