The vehicle chassis is the part that is subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of body mass when driving quickly through corners, braking hard or accelerating.
In some cases, weight transfer in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to as much as three times more force than the other. This results in significant deformation and twisting of the chassis or body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Deformation and twisting of the chassis when driving through a corner can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
