The effect of body stiffness on handling

The vehicle body is the part subjected to the greatest loads as a result of the driver’s driving style. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of body weight when driving quickly through corners, braking hard or accelerating intensely.

In some cases, weight transfer in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more force than the other. The result is significant deformation and twisting of the body, causing the tyres to lose grip.

Deformation and twisting of the chassis in corners can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
