The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest stresses during driving. This is particularly noticeable when the body weight is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer when cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. This causes considerable chassis flex or deformation and torsional loads on the body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flexing while driving through a corner can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
