A car’s chassis is subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly noticeable due to the transfer of the body’s weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer when cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to 3 times more force than the other. This leads to significant chassis flex, or deformation and torsion of the body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flexing when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
