The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly noticeable due to the transfer of the body’s weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to as much as three times more force than the other. This can result in significant bending and twisting of the chassis or bodywork, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Bending and twisting of the chassis while driving through a corner can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
