A vehicle’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads when driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. This can result in significant chassis or body shell bending and twisting, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis bending and twisting when cornering can cause unwanted handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
