The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads as a result of the driver’s driving. High loads occur mainly due to the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
When cornering, the transfer of weight to one side of the vehicle can create forces up to three times greater than on the other side. This causes major deformation and twisting of the chassis or bodywork, which can result in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
