A car’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident when the body mass is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, transferring mass in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. This causes significant deformation and twisting of the chassis or bodywork, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Deformation and twisting of the chassis while cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
