The vehicle chassis is the part exposed to the greatest loads while driving. These loads are mainly caused by the transfer of body mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
When cornering, the transfer of mass can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. This can cause significant bending and twisting of the chassis or deformation of the body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Deformation and twisting of the chassis during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
