The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads while driving. This is particularly pronounced due to the transfer of body mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or sudden acceleration.
When driving through corners, the transfer of mass can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. This causes the chassis to flex, or the bodywork to deform and twist torsionally, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flexing during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
