The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of the body’s mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
When cornering, mass transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to as much as three times greater force than the other. This can result in significant chassis twisting, body deformation and loss of tyre grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
