A car’s chassis is the part that is subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident when the weight of the body is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer while cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to a force up to three times greater than the other. This can result in significant chassis flex, deformation and body twisting, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting while cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
