The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during dynamic driving. This is particularly evident when transferring the body’s weight through fast corners, during hard braking or intense acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to 3 times more than the other. This results in greater bending and twisting of the chassis, or deformation of the body, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting when driving through corners can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
