A car’s chassis is subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is especially noticeable when the body’s weight is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. This can result in considerable chassis flex and body deformation, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flex during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
