The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads while driving. This is particularly noticeable due to the transfer of body mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or sudden acceleration.
When cornering, mass transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. This causes pronounced chassis flex, or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, resulting in a loss of tyre grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
