A car’s chassis is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads during dynamic driving. This is particularly pronounced due to the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or sudden acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to loads up to 3 times greater than the other. This causes considerable chassis flex or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flexing during cornering can cause undesirable driving characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
