The car’s bodywork is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads during dynamic driving. This is particularly pronounced due to the transfer of the bodywork’s mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, mass transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to a force up to three times greater than the other. This results in increased twisting and bending of the bodywork, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Twisting and deformation of the chassis when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
