The car’s chassis is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads as a result of the way it is driven. This is particularly apparent when the vehicle’s weight is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer when cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more force than the other. This results in significant chassis flex or body deformation, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flex when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
