A car’s chassis is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads while driving. This is particularly pronounced due to the transfer of the vehicle body’s mass when driving quickly through corners, braking hard or accelerating sharply.
When driving through a corner, the transfer of mass to one side of the vehicle can result in forces up to three times greater than on the other side. This places heavy loads on the chassis, twists the body and consequently reduces tyre grip.
Deformation and twisting of the chassis when driving through corners can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
