The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest stress during dynamic driving. This is particularly noticeable due to the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or sudden acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more heavily than the other. This results in greater stress on the chassis, body flex and torsional twisting, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis flexing and twisting during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
